Wofford Reaches Milestone

Congratulations to Chase Wofford for recording his 500th rebound as a Mountaineer against Bethel University on Friday, December 10th. Wofford is a senior, forward from Danville, Kentucky.

Dorsey Leads Mountaineers Past Eagles in KIAC Opener

            The Mountaineers opened their KIAC season last night and improved their season record to 10-6 as they defeated Cincinnati Christian University 97-87. Darrin Dorsey dominated the game in all phases of the game recording a near triple-double with 40 points, 10 assists, 9 rebounds and 6 steals. Dorsey also hit a career milestone last night scoring his 1,000th point in just 50 games.
           
            To go along with Dorsey’s big night, four other Mountaineers reached double figures in the victory. Rudy Evans had a solid night on the offensive end scoring 17 points. Chase Wofford was dealing with a stomach illness during the game was contributed 14 points. Trey Congleton and Josh Clark rounded out the double figure scorers with both chipping in 11 points and Congleton also grabbed 7 rebounds.

            The Mountaineers will be idle over the Christmas break until Thursday, January 6th when they travel to Portsmouth, Ohio to face NAIA Division I Shawnee State University at 8:00 pm. Berea will be back at Seabury Arena on Saturday, January 15th as they face St. Louis College of Pharmacy at 4:00 pm.

Mountaineers Earn Split at Taylor University Classic

            The Mountaineers were on the road this past weekend in Upland, Indiana for their final classic of the season as they faced NAIA Division I Bethel University out of McKenzie, Tennessee at the Taylor University Ivanhoe Classic. The Mountaineers and Bethel would exchange baskets in the first half with Berea down one at halftime 35-34. The Mountaineers were not able to match the size and length of Bethel in the second half as Bethel extended their halftime lead to a 13 point victory 90-77 over Berea. The Mountaineers from the field shot 25-58 (.431) including 6-23 (.261) from the three-point line and 21-32 (.656) from the free throw line.

            Three Mountaineers scored in double figures and were led by Darrin Dorsey’s 26 points and 9 rebounds. Rudy Evans and Chase Wofford were also in double figures with Evans getting 20 points and Wofford scoring 14 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Other Mountaineers in the scoring column were Kevin Burrus with 7 points, Trey Congleton and Brad McIntosh both chipping in 3 points, and Josh Clark and Derek Davis each had 2 points.

            The second day of the Ivanhoe Classic for the Mountaineers faced the Scarlet Wave of OSU-Marion. The Mountaineers put the game away in the first half going into halftime with a 64-31 lead, and then coasted in the second half to a 103-81 victory. Berea was 44-73 (.603) from the field including 7-17 (.412) from the three-point line and 8-12 (.667) from the free throw line.

            The Mountaineers were led by Kevin Burrus and Chase Wofford with Burrus chalking up 21 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists and Wofford having 21 points and 9 rebounds. Darrin Dorsey was the other Mountaineer to score in double figures with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 5 assists. Rudy Evans and Josh Clark both contributed 9 points to the victory, but Evans also dished out 6 assists. Other Mountaineers helping out in the victory were Trey Congleton with 8 points and 6 rebounds, Brad McIntosh had 6 points, Derek Davis chipped in 5 points, Joey King with 3 points and Lathan Bennett scored 2 points and handed out 4 assists.
           
            The Mountaineers are currently 9-6 on the season and begin conference play in their KIAC opener on Friday, December 17th at 7:30 pm. Berea will face the Eagles of Cincinnati Christian at Seabury Arena.

Mountaineers Dominate Boyce College

The Berea College Mountaineers hosted the Bulldogs of Boyce College and improved their season record to 8-5 with a convincing 104-63 win. The Mountaineers as a team shot 41-78 (.526) from the field including 7-20 (.350) from the three-point line and 15-23 (.652) from the free throw line. Berea outrebounded Boyce 50-32 and forced Boyce into 21 turnovers for the game.

            The Mountaineers had 5 players score in double figures and were led by Darrin Dorsey’s 22 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Chase Wofford contributed 18 points and 8 rebounds to the Mountaineer victory. Rudy Evans had 16 points, 5 assists and was 4-5 (.800) from the three-point line. Trey Congleton led the team in rebounding grabbing 9 boards along with scoring 12 points and dishing out 4 assists. Kevin Burrus chalked up 12 points to round out the double figure scorers. Other Mountaineers in the scoring column were Brad McIntosh with 8 points, Derek Davis knocked in 7 points, Josh Clark with 4 points, Branden Raider had 3 points and Lathan Bennett made 2 points.

            The Mountaineers will be on the road this weekend as they take on NAIA Division I Bethel University (Tennessee) at the Taylor University Ivanhoe Classic in Upland, Indiana on Friday December 10th at 8:00 pm.

Mountaineers Downed by Union College

            The Berea College Mountaineers came up short in the second game of the “Roland Wierwille Classic” to Union College out of Barbourville, Kentucky, 83-77. The Mountaineers shot 24-56 (.429) from the field including 5-20 (.250) from the three-point line and 24-31 (.774) from the free throw line.

            Berea College had three players score in double figures led by Darrin Dorsey’s 31 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Rudy Evans and Chase Wofford were the other two Mountaineers in double figures with Evans contributing 21 points and 3 assists, and Chase Wofford pitched in 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks. Kevin Burrus, Trey Congleton and Josh Clark were also in the scoring column with Burrus tallying 8 points, Congleton with 5 points and 7 rebounds and Clark chalking up 2 points.

            The Mountaineers are now 7-5 on the season and will return to action Tuesday, December 7th at Seabury Arena as they face Boyce College out of Louisville, Kentucky. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.

Mountaineers too much for OSU-Mansfield

            The Berea College Mountaineers rolled past the Mavericks of OSU-Mansfield Friday, December 3rd, in their opening game of “Roland Wierwille Classic” by a score of 131-53. The Mountaineers shot 55-82 (.671) from the field including 6-17 (.353) from the three-point line and were 15-18 (.833) from the free throw line. Berea dominated OSU-Mansfield on the glass outrebounding the Mavericks 57-21. The Mountaineers also dished out 39 assists and snatched 21 steals in the game.
            The Mountaineers had a balanced scoring attack with 8 players scoring in double figures. Brad McIntosh led the team in scoring with a career high 18 points. Trey Congleton and Darrin Dorsey both posted double-doubles with Congleton scoring 16 points and grabbing a team high 12 rebounds, and Dorsey contributed 15 points, 8 rebounds and dished out a team high 10 assists. Derek Davis chalked up 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists which are all career highs for Davis at Berea College. Josh Clark and Rudy Evans both had solid performances with Clark posting 14 points and 8 rebounds, and Evans tossed in 13 points and dished out 5 assists. Chase Wofford and Lathan Bennett were the last two Mountaineers scoring in double figures with Wofford contributing 12 points and Bennett chipped in 10 points. Other Mountaineers in the scoring column were Kevin Burrus with 9 points and 9 assists, Joey King with 5 points and Branden Raider scoring 4 points in the Mountaineer victory.

Bulldogs Slide by Mountaineers

            The Berea College Mountaineers were on the road again Wednesday, December 1st, but had their road trip was spoiled by the Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan College with an 89-82 defeat. The Mountaineers shot 30-63 (.476) from the field including 11-24 (.458) from the three-point line and 11-13 (.846) from the free throw line. Berea outrebounded Tennessee Wesleyan 37-29.
            Darrin Dorsey had an impressive stat line containing 35 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Rudy Evans and Chase Wofford were the other Mountaineers in double figures with Evans scoring 17 points and Wofford tossing in 16 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Trey Congleton led the team in rebounding grabbing 12 boards and also had 6 points.
            The Mountaineers move to 6-4 on the season and return home to Seabury Arena Friday night December 3rd to face OSU-Mansfield in the “Roland Wierwille Classic” at 8:00 pm.
