Blue-White Scrimmage

The Berea College Mountaineers' "Blue-White" scrimmage will be held on Thursday, October 20th at 8:00 pm at Seabury Arena. The scrimmage is open to the public and will feature a dunk contest at halftime of the scrimmage.

Evans Sets School Record

            Rudy Evans, senior guard from Cleveland, Ohio, entered Thursday night’s KIAC Tournament semifinal matchup versus the Red Wolves of Indiana University East with a career point total 922. Evans was a two-year transfer from Cuyahoga Community College and had Marcus Crawford’s record for “Most Points in Two Year Career” in sights with Crawford totaling 930 points from 1979-81. Evans finished the game with 21 points which made his two-year total 943 points.

Mountaineers Season Comes to an End

            The Berea College Mountaineers’ entered Thursday night’s KIAC Tournament semifinal game at Richmond, Indiana against the Red Wolves of Indiana University East with an overall record of 17-14. The Mountaineers made a late run in the last minute of the first half to go into the locker room down 44-33, but would not shrink the deficit anymore as the Red Wolves prevailed over the Mountaineers 87-63. The Mountaineers shot 23-64 (.359) from the field including 4-14 (.286) from the three-point line and 13-16 (.813) from the free throw line.

            Berea College had three players score in double figures and was led by senior guard Rudy Evans’ 21 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Kevin Burrus and Ardell Wheeler rounded out the double figure scorers with Burrus contributing 13 points and 4 rebounds, and Wheeler chalked up 11 points and 5 rebounds. Other Mountaineers in the scoring column were Brad McIntosh with 5 points, Trey Congleton and Branden Raider both had 4 points, Lathan Bennett contributed 3 points and Josh Clark scored 2 points.

            The Mountaineers finished the 2010-11 season with an overall record of 17-15 and finished fourth in the KIAC with a record of 7-6.

Evans Receives All-Conference Team Honors

Senior guard from Cleveland, Ohio, has been voted onto the KIAC All-Conference team by the coaches in the conference. Evans has averaged 18.3 points, 4.9 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game and is ranked #5 in NAIA Division II basketball in total steals and #8 in steals per game.

Mountaineers Advance to Second Round

            The Berea College Mountaineers opened the first round of the KIAC tournament Tuesday night at home versus Alice Lloyd College and came away with an 83-70 victory over the Eagles. Berea College shot 32-64 (.500) from the field including 8-20 (.400) from the three-point line and 11-13 (.846) from the free throw line. The Mountaineers outrebounded the Eagles 45-36 and dished out 23 assists in the victory.

            Rudy Evans led the way for Berea College posting a career-high 33 points and also tossed out 9 assists. Evans was 12-17 (.706) from the floor including 3-6 (.500) from the three point line and 6-7 (.857) from the free throw line. Trey Congleton posted a double-double scoring 14 points and grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds. Kevin Burrus and Derek Davis were the last two Mountaineers in double figures with Burrus scoring 12 points and Davis contributing 10 points. Both Burrus and Davis each had 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Other Mountaineers in the stat sheet were Josh Clark with 8 points, Ardell Wheeler nabbed 7 rebounds and Joey King and Brad McIntosh each chipping in 3 points to the victory.

            Berea College improves their overall record to 17-14 and will advance to the second round Thursday night as they travel to Richmond, Indiana to take on #2 seed Indiana University East at 7:00 pm. The winner will advance to the conference championship game on Saturday and will face the winner of the Indiana University-Southeast/Brescia University semifinal game.

Mountaineers Win Regular Season Finale

            The Berea College Mountaineers (16-14, 7-6) made the road trip to Owensboro, Kentucky, to face the Bearcats of Brescia University (8-19, 4-9) and came away with a thrilling 72-69 victory. The Mountaineers shot 28-58 (.483) from the field including 6-17 (.353) from the three-point line and 10-19 (.526) from the free throw line. Berea College outrebounded the Bearcats 38-32 including 14 offensive rebounds.

            The Mountaineers had four players in double figures and were led by senior guard Rudy Evans’ 20 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds. Josh Clark contributed 16 points and 4 rebounds including a huge three pointer with less than a minute to go to extend a one point Mountaineer lead to four points. Trey Congleton and Derek Davis both chalked up 12 points to round out the double figure scorers and Congleton also grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds. Other Mountaineers contributing to the victory were Ardell Wheeler with 8 points and 4 rebounds, Kevin Burrus tallied 2 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists, and Brad McIntosh had 2 points.

            The Mountaineers guarantee themselves a winning season with Saturday’s victory over Brescia University and enter the KIAC Tournament as the #4 seed. Berea College will host its first round game at Seabury Arena Tuesday, February 22nd as they take on the #5 seeded Eagles of Alice Lloyd College. Game time is still to be announced.

Mountaineers Come Up Short at Asbury

            The Berea College Mountaineers (15-13, 6-6) were on the road Tuesday night at Asbury University (19-7, 10-2) and gave the Eagles all they could handle. The entire game was back and forth with both teams leading no more than 7 points at any point in the game, but the Mountaineers fell short to the Eagles 52-49.

            Berea College’s defense was a major factor in the game only allowing Asbury University to shoot 19-51 (.373) from the field including 4-22 (.182) from the three-point line. The Mountaineers outrebounded the Eagles 41-35 and forced Asbury into 19 turnovers for the game.

            Berea College only had one player score in double figures and was led by junior guard Derek Davis’s 13 points and 5 rebounds. Trey Congleton led the Mountaineers in rebounding grabbing 10 rebounds and also contributed 6 points. Other Mountaineers in the scoring column were Josh Clark with 9 points, Lathan Bennett chipped in 8 points, Kevin Burrus had 7 points and both Joey King and Ardell Wheeler chalked up 3 points.

            The Mountaineers will return to action Thursday, February 17th at 8:00 pm at Seabury Arena as they take on the Knights of Kentucky Christian University. Berea College will be recognizing its four seniors before the game for “Senior Night”.

Red Wolves Too Much for Mountaineers

            The Mountaineers entered Saturday’s game winning four out of their last six games and were playing some of their best basketball this season, but it did not appear that way against Indiana University East. Berea College found themselves down 19-4 after just three minutes of play due to the outside shooting of IU East’s wings Matt Trimnell and Tyler Rigby. The Mountaineers did get themselves back into the game going into halftime down 40-34, but the Red Wolves extended their lead at the beginning of the second half to put the game out of reach for Berea College. The Mountaineers would fall to the Red Wolves 76-52 making their overall record 15-12 and 6-5 in the KIAC.

            Leading the Mountaineers was senior guard Kevin Burrus who finished the game with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Rudy Evans was the only other Mountaineer scoring in double figures with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Josh Clark chalked up 6 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Trey Congleton led the team in rebounds with 10 boards and chipped in 5 points. Other Mountaineers in the scoring column were Ardell Wheeler with 5 points and 5 rebounds, Brad McIntosh with 3 points and Derek Davis scoring 2 points.

            The Mountaineers will be on the road Tuesday night February 15th as they face KIAC foe Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm.
