Mountaineers Earn a Split on the Weekend

            Berea College began their weekend home stand Friday night as they hosted the Red Wolves of Indiana University East. The Mountaineers and the Red Wolves were deadlock at halftime 38-38, but the Red Wolves’ outside shooting was too much for the Mountaineers to overcome as Berea College falls 86-73. The Mountaineers shot 28-59 (.475) from the field including 4-20 (.200) from the three-point line and 13-20 (.650) from the free throw line.

            The Mountaineers had four players score in double figures led by junior forward Josh Clark posting his best stat line of the season with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Rudy Evans contributed 16 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Derek Davis and Kevin Burrus rounded out the double figure scorers with Davis knocking in 12 points, and Burrus chalking up 11 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. Other Mountaineers making their way into the scoring column were Trey Congleton and Ardell Wheeler. Congleton contributed 7 points and grabbing a team-high 9 rebounds and Wheeler tallied up 8 points.

            Berea College had a quick turnaround as they faced Brescia University Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers were down as much as 13 points with 18:26 to go in the game, but chipped away at Brescia’s lead. The Mountaineers rallied to a thrilling 72-70 victory over the Bearcats. The Mountaineers shot 26-58 (.448) from the field including 6-10 (.600) from the three-point line and 14-19 (.737) from the free throw line.

            The Mountaineers had four players in double figures and were led by senior guard Rudy Evans with a team-high 20 points and 8 assists. Kevin Burrus had a great shooting day going 7-9 from the field including 2-2 from the three-point line tallying up 18 points in the victory. Trey Congleton posted 12 points and grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds. Derek Davis rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 points. Other Mountaineers in the scoring column were Ardell Wheeler with 7 points and Josh Clark chalking up 4 points.

            The Mountaineers are currently 13-10 overall and 4-3 in the KIAC after their weekend home stand. Berea College will be on the road Tuesday night as they travel to New Albany, Indiana to take on conference rival Indiana University-Southeast at 7:30 pm.

Mountaineers Win Shootout against Alice Lloyd

The Berea College Mountaineers got a huge KIAC road victory over Alice Lloyd College Tuesday night defeating the Eagles 98-88. Berea had one of its best offensive games of the season shooting 38-62 (.613) from the field including 13-25 (.520) from the three-point line and 9-14 (.643) from the free throw line. The Mountaineers won the rebounding battle 36-35 and dished out 32 assists.

The Mountaineers had two players with career nights and two others scoring in double figures last night with Rudy Evans leading the charge with a career-high scoring 31 points, distributed 9 assists and grabbed 6 rebounds. Evans was 12-17 from the field including 5-9 from the three-point line. Derek Davis also had a career-high 27 points shooting 9-15 from the field including 7-11 from the three-point line and dished out 4 assists. Trey Congleton recorded a double-double laying in 18 points and hauling down 11 rebounds. Kevin Burrus chipped in 13 points and handed out 6 assists in the Mountaineer victory. Josh Clark added a solid performance of 7 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Ardell Wheeler rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Coach Hemenway commented after the game, “The guys played about as well as we could have asked. To go on the road and win a KIAC game in a hostile environment is a tremendous accomplishment. This should boost our confidence level for the rest of the season. I am proud of our effort.”

Berea College now improves their record to 12-9 overall and 3-2 in the KIAC. The Mountaineers will return to Seabury Arena for a weekend home stand against Indiana University East and Brescia University. Berea College will face Indiana University East Friday, January 27th at 7:30 pm and will turn around Saturday, January 28th to take on Brescia University at 4:00 pm.

Mountaineers Rally Falls Short to #22 IU Southeast

The Berea College Mountaineers found themselves down at halftime with a 42-24 deficit to the Grenadiers of IU Southeast, but were able to chip that lead down to 54-51 with 9:28 to go in the game after a three-point basket by junior forward Josh Clark. The Mountaineers would come up short at the end falling to IU Southeast 79-55. Berea College shot 21-55 (.382) from the field including 7-26 (.269) from the three-point line and 6-17 (.353) from the free throw line. The Mountaineers outrebounded the Grenadiers 38-37.

Senior guard Rudy Evans led the Mountaineers in scoring and assists with 16 points and 6 assists. Trey Congleton was also in double figures scoring 13 points and grabbed a team high 9 rebounds. Josh Clark and Kevin Burrus both chipped in 9 points along with Clark ripping down 7 rebounds and Burrus also dished out 5 assists. Other Mountaineers in the scoring column were Derek Davis scoring 6 points off two three-point baskets and Ardell Wheeler with 2 points.

The Mountaineers currently sit with an 11-9 overall record and are 2-2 in the KIAC. Berea College will be on the road Tuesday, January 25th at 7:30 pm as they face the Eagles of Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Pappes, Kentucky.

Dorsey Sidelined for the Season

Senior guard Darrin Dorsey has a stress fracture in his left foot that will require surgery in the upcoming weeks. Dorsey ends his season averaging 23.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 3.1 steals per game for the Mountaineers.

Mountaineers Improve to 2-0 in the KIAC

The Mountaineers faced the Eutectics of St. Louis College of Pharmacy at Seabury Arena and dominated the entire game resulting in an 89-43 victory for the Mountaineers. Berea College shot 34-69 (.493) from the field including 11-21 (.524) from the three-point line and 10-19 (.526) from the free throw line. The Mountaineers outrebounded Pharmacy 54-34.

Berea College had many contributions in the victory led by Rudy Evans' 22 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals. Derek Davis knocked in 14 points including 4-6 from the three-point line. Trey Congleton was the last Mountaineer in double figures with 11 points and grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds. Josh Clark had a solid game with 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Joey King contributed a career-high 9 points to the win. Other Mountaineers in the scoring column were Kevin Burrus and Brad McIntosh with 7 points, Ardell Wheeler scoring 5 points and grabbing 7 rebounds, Chase Wofford with 3 points and Branden Raider had 2 points.

The Mountaineers move to 11-7 overall and 2-0 in the KIAC. Next up for Berea College is Asbury University on Tuesday, January 18th at 7:30 pm at Seabury Arena.
