Mountaineers Get Weekend Split

         The Berea Mountaineers were on the road again this past weekend playing in the Dimmich Memorial Tournament, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. The Mountaineers’ first opponent was the #24 ranked Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats. Indiana Wesleyan jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the beginning minutes of the game. Berea came back to tie the game 9-9 with 13:39 to go in the first half and that would be the closest the score would be the rest of the game. Indiana Wesleyan used a 9-0 run to make the score 18-9 and would lead 38-24 with a 1:04 left in the half. Berea closed the deficit down to 38-29 just before halftime with a three pointer by Rudy Evans and a steal by Rudy which led to a layup by Lathan Bennett.

         Indiana Wesleyan had a fast start to the second half pushing their lead to 17 points with 15 minutes to play in the game, and led by as much as 26 points. Berea did make a run in the second half with 6:24 to go after back-to-back three pointers by Rudy Evans and Darrin Dorsey to close the gap to 17 points, but it would not be enough. The final score was 89-66 with three Mountaineers scoring in double figures. Rudy Evans led the team with 22 points. Darrin Dorsey followed with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Kevin Burrus contributed 12 points to Berea’s scoring. Trey Congleton led the team in rebounding with 7 and also had 8 points in the game. Berea was 21-62 (.339) from the field, 5-24 (.208) from three, and shot 19-30 (.633) from the free-throw line. Berea would go on to face East-West out of Chicago, IL in the consolation game of the tournament on Saturday at 1:00 pm.

          The Mountaineers came out looking like a different team against East-West jumping out to a 9-0 lead. Berea continued its onslaught tallying up a 33 point-lead at halftime with the score being 58-25. The Mountaineers came out in the second half and led by as much as 45 points. The final score of the game was 107-72. Berea’s team stats included 38-63 (.603) shooting from the field, 8-19 (.421) from the three-point line, and 23-34 (.676) from the free throw line. Berea had a lot of great performances including 5 players in double figures. The Mountaineers were led in scoring by Rudy Evans who had 26 points. Rudy was 11-13 from the field including 4-4 from the three-point line. Darrin Dorsey had an impressive stat line of 22 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals. Trey Congleton posted a career-high 17 points and also had 5 rebounds in the game. Chase Wofford contributed 16 points and 7 rebounds to the Mountaineers’ win. Josh Clark and Lathan Bennett also had nice contributions with Clark scoring 11 points and grabbing 6 rebounds, and Lathan Bennett tallied 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Kevin Burrus also dished out 5 assists in the game.

        The Mountaineers will be back in action Tuesday, November 9th for their home opener against Crown College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Seabury Arena.
