The Berea Mountaineers were on the road this weekend at the Marian University “Ken Elmendorf Memorial Classic”. The Mountaineers faced the Cougars of Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Friday night and came away with a victory of 71-65. Berea shot 26-64 (.406) from the field including 6-22 (.273) from the three-point line and shot 13-27 (.481) from the free throw line. The difference in the game was Berea only committed 8 turnovers and Mt. Vernon Nazarene turned the ball over 21 times during the game.
Darrin Dorsey led the Mountaineers in three statistical categories with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals. Dorsey was 7-15 from the field including 2-6 from the three-point line and was 6-9 from the free throw line. Rudy Evans posted 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Josh Clark contributed 14 points and 6 rebounds to the Mountaineer victory. Other Mountaineers contributing to the win were Chase Wofford with 8 points and 6 rebounds, Lathan Bennett and Trey Congleton each chipped in 4 points.
Berea advanced to the championship game Saturday afternoon and would face Marian University. The Mountaineers were currently on a 5-game winning streak, but that streak would come to an end as the Mountaineers would drop a heart breaker in overtime 81-75. The Mountaineers were outscored in the overtime period 11-5. Berea for the game was 25-59 (.424) from the field including 3-17 (.176) from the three-point line and 22-29 (.759) from the free throw line. Berea won the rebounding battle 45-39 including 9 offensive rebounds.
Darrin Dorsey was the leading scorer for Berea with 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals. Chase Wofford posted a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds including 6 offensive rebounds. Rudy Evans was the last Mountaineer scoring double figures chipping in 14 points. Other Mountaineers contributing in the game were Josh Clark with 6 points and 11 rebounds, Lathan Bennett grabbing 7 rebounds and dishing out a team-high 7 assists, Trey Congleton had 4 points and Joey King knocked down 3 points.
Berea will enter the Thanksgiving break with a 6-2 record and will return to action on Monday, November 29th at 7:00 pm as they will be on the road at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky.
